The Week of October 1st through 5th ,2018

**Test will be on Friday, October 5th.  Spelling tests will be the last day of the school week and a new list will be sent home on Fridays.  Students who pass the pretest on Monday with 100% will not have to take the test on Friday.

Reading/ELA:

  • Focusing on Verbs
  • Character Traits:  Looking at Characters in stories and identifying character traits used.
  • Vocabulary focus:
    • Our words this week are:  convince, swiftly, rely, rare, and precise
    • Our WOW word will be: powerful
    • Our novel is Wonder by R.J. Palacio.  I am reading this aloud to the class. 
    • We will also be starting Robin Hood as our school-wide book selection for October.  Students will be able to dress up as characters from the book, Robin Hood on October 31st! Don't be afraid to be creative! 
Math:
  • This week our lessons will be on the math practices and problem solving. We will be looking at the steps we would need to make to solve word problems involving multiple operations to solve the problem. 
  • Homework will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Homework is due the following morning. Five points will be added in the gradebook for homework returned and completed.  Students who forget their homework can log on to enVision which is a link on the right side of this blog page. The homework that would have been on the page is on the website.  I will list the lesson number below under homework.   
Science:
  • Scientific Process:  Focusing on identifying the problem, finding a possible solution, trying to solve with the materials provided and solving the problem.  

Character Education Focus:  
  • Our September focus will be on TRUSTWORTHINESS.

    • Monday, Oct 1st:  Lesson 2-6  Model with Math
    • Wednesday, 3rd:  Reteach and vocabulary review as well as skill review for assessment on Topic 2 which will be done in class on Friday.
  • Reading homework-20 minutes minimum per evening.  Put minutes on reading calendar which will be due the first week of October.  Reading homework requirement is 400 minutes per month for 100% in grade book.  Starting with the October reading calendar, students who read at least 400 minutes for the month and turn it in the first week of November will receive a free personal pizza coupon for Pizza Hut in addition to their grade.

  • Kindness Challenge;  Students were given a Kindness Challenge Checkoff sheet on Friday.  The goal is to have them do the kindness actions listed on the paper or write in new ones and turn it in by Thursday, September 27th to receive their Kindness Recognition Award!

  • Asking Questions when reading a text.
  • We will continue our vocabulary focus.  Hopefully you will start hearing these words added to their vocabulary!  Since we are just getting used to this process we are not moving through the words as quickly.  We will have an assessment on the 12 words we have learned 
    • Our words this week are:  assemble     grumble     calculate     elegant     privilege.  
    • Our WOW word will be: prearrange
    • Our novel is Wonder by R.J. Palacio.  I am reading this aloud to the class.
Math:
  • This week our lessons will focus on two, five and nine as factors.  
  • Homework will be on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Homework is due the following morning.
