The Week of January 29th through February 2nd, 2018

Spelling: List #9 /f/ (ph)

·         Spelling Test will be this Friday, February 2nd, 2018.

Reading and Language Arts:
  • We have finished our class novel, Runaway Ralph.  We are completing our comprehension packets and will take a test on the book on Friday. Students are allowed to use their comprehension packets during the test. 
  • We are starting our Article of the Day using Readworks reading program.  
  • Grammar Rule #13:  The verb in a sentence must agree with the subject of the sentence.  For example:  If the subject is singular then the verb must be singular.  Our apple tree blooms in April.
  • Grammar Rule #14:  The tense of a verb tells when an action occurs~Past, Present or Past.  For example:  am eating in the present tense, ate in the past tense and will eat in the future tense.


Math:



  • Math lesson #10  Compare unit fractions by reasoning about their size using fraction strips. (equivalent fractions)

  • We are really working alot on quick recall of multiplication facts. We will be testing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on our multiplication facts.  As soon as a child finishes the 2's, for example, they move on to 3's and so forth.  This is not for a grade but is so important for using multiplication in all areas of math.  Practicing flashcards at home will help get those facts into long term memory.


Science:  Weather, Climate and Water Cycle.

Art:  Experiencing the art form of pointillism and artist, George Seurat.

Homework:
  • Math homework:  **Monday: lesson #9  Compare unit fractions and practice page of multiples of 8.  ** Wednesday: lesson #10  Comparing equivalent fractions. 
  • Practice Spelling words from List #9 /f/ (ph).  Test Friday. 
  • Flashcards: practice multiplication facts using flashcards or writing down all of the facts from the 1's family through the 12's for practice.

Dates to Remember: 
  • Valentine's Day party on Wednesday, Feb. 14th.  Students will need to make or buy a container for their valentines and treats with their name clearly displayed.  Students can address their cards with a child's name or they can just write "To my friend," and then sign their name.  Whatever they would like to do is fine.  We will celebrate at the end of the day (after Technology class 2:20 pm) and it will be very simple.  Students will pass out Valentines and then enjoy going through their goodies.  If anyone wants to send in any treats that would be great also.  
****Please remind your child to bring a snack to have at our morning break (10:30 am) since they don't eat lunch until 1:00 pm.

  • ·         We are close to finishing our class novel, Runaway Ralph by Beverly Cleary.  We are doing a comprehension and vocabulary packet along with the reading. 
  • ·         Student will take a test at the end of the book and can use their packet to answer the questions.
  • ·         Continuing to work on our commas packet and where they should be placed in a series of words, addresses and in dialogue.



Math:  
  • We are starting our lessons on fractions. Students will have homework on Monday and Wednesday night.  
  • We are really working alot on quick recall of multiplication facts. We will be testing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on our multiplication facts.  As soon as a child finishes the 2's, for example, they move on to 3's and so forth.  This is not for a grade but is so important for using multiplication in all areas of math.  Practicing flashcards at home will help get those facts into long term memory.

  • Math homework:  **Monday lesson 5 --Partition a whole into equal parts and define the equal parts to identify the unit fraction numerically. **Wednesday lesson 6 -- Build non-unit fractions less than one whole from unit fractions.
  • Practice Spelling words from List #9 /f/ (ph)·        
  • Flashcards: practice multiplication facts using flashcards or writing down all of the facts from the 1's family through the 12's for practice.


·         **Thank you for sending new headphones with your child.  They use them often.

  • December Reading calendars were due last week.  If your child has not turned it in please have them do so.  Reading calendars are for a grade. Four hundred minutes or more a month is 100%.

  • *** Some students do not have working headphones to use at school.  If it is possible for you to replace your child's broken headphones that would be great.  If you cannot at this time I will work on getting some extra headphones.

  • Learning about Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Winter Reading Assessments to determine new reading level cards.
Math:  
  • This week we will review all of our multiplication and division facts and strategies that we have learned so far.  
  • Working on quick recall of multiplication facts.
Science:  
  • Weather conditions and tracking.

Homework:
  • December Reading calendars are due this week.  Remember that 400 minutes a month or more receives full credit (100%) in the grade book.  January calendars are going home with your child on Monday.
