The Week of December 10th through 14th, 2018

Spelling: List #13 Homophones:  Words that sound the same but have different meanings and different spellings.
Regular list: ant     aunt     there     their     they're     brake     break     your     you're     beat     beet     sail     sale     bare     bear
Review words:  license     distance     yesterday
Challenge words:  clothes      close
Need to Know words:  by     buy     right     write     one     won

Alternative List:  there     their     they're     your     you're     sail     sale     clothes     close     right     write     one     won    (there are 13 words this time due to the homophones matching).

**Test will be on Friday, December 14th.  Spelling tests will be the last day of the school week and a new list will be sent home on Fridays/last day of the week.  Students who pass the pretest on Monday with 100% will not have to take the test at the end of the week.

Reading/ELA:

  • Working on writing:  Beginning our Informational Writing Unit
  • Reading focus:  Asking and Answering Questions
  • Vocabulary focus:  gradually, merchant, essential, fortunate, immense and WOW word:  submarine
  • We started our new class novel, Mouse and the Motorcycle and are having a lot of fun reading it!
Math:
  • This week we will be continuing Topic 4:  Using Multiplication to Divide.
  • Monday: 4-5 Multiplication Patterns:  Even and Odd Numbers 
  • Wednesday:  Division Involving 0 and 1.
  • Homework will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Homework is due the following morning. Five points will be added in the grade book for homework returned and completed.  Students who forget their homework can log on to enVision which is a link on the right side of this blog page. The homework that would have been on the page is on the website.  I will list the lesson number below under homework.   
Science:
  • STEM Manipulative Sets

Social Studies: 
  • Intermediate Directions on a Map

Character Education Focus:  
  • Our December Character focus is on Responsibility. 

Homework:
  • Math homework 
    • Monday, Nov. 26th:  Lesson 4-5  Multiplication Patterns:  Even and Odd Numbers.
    • Wednesday, Nov. 28th:  Lesson 4-6  Division Involving 0 and 1.
  • Spelling words:  Practice this weeks spelling words for our test at the end of the week.
  • Reading homework-20 minutes minimum per evening.  Put minutes on reading calendar which will be due the first week of October.  Reading homework requirement is 400 minutes per month for 100% in grade book.  Starting with the October reading calendar, students who read at least 400 minutes for the month and turn it in the first week of November will receive a free personal pizza coupon for Pizza Hut in addition to their grade.
  •  November Reading Calendars were due on December 3rd.  Please send in signed calendars as soon as possible.
Snow Day Information:
  • In the event that school is closed for snow days exceeding 2 days, students will need to complete 4 hours to count the day as a school day.  I am sending home a snow day packet with work outlined for the four hours that would need to be separated from the packet and returned to school once school resumes.  I will send an electronic copy as well as a paper copy and will email parents to let them know when those days of school work would need to be completed.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  If we have only 1 or 2 snow days, no work from the packet would be required.  I will always email when work would be needed.  
Dates to remember:
  • November Reading Calendars are due now.
  • Class Christmas Party is on Thursday, December 20th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. I will send an email to sign up for helpers and supplies needed.  
  • Christmas Vacation is December 22nd through January 7th, 2019.
