The Week of May 21st through 25th, 2018   LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL

➤Reading Calendar: May reading calendars are due.  Please send them to school as soon as possible or email me your child's minutes.

➤SHARE DAYS:  The kids are excited to have share days for the next two weeks!  I will sent a calendar home with students on Monday the 7th so they know when their day will be.  We cannot have any pets from home because of allergy concerns.  Things that teach us about something are really fun!  Please email me if you have any questions about the item your child wants to share.

➤Dates to Remember: 

• Countdown to the last day of school!  We will be doing a fun countdown with special activities each day through the last day of school.  I will email the day before when it is something kids can bring from home otherwise I will be providing the fun activities and supplies.
• May reading calendar is due on Friday, May 18th.  300 minutes is the minimum to receive 100%.
• Summer birthday celebration will be on Monday, May 21st for kids who have birthdays after the last day of school but before the first day of school in August.  If you would like to send treats with your child for this celebration that would be wonderful!
• Thursday, May 24th:  Field Day will be one hour and students will move through several stations of activities.  Comfortable clothing would be best.
• Last day of school is on Friday, May 25th with early release at 1:45 pm.

****Please remind your child to bring a snack to have at our morning break (10:30 am) since they don't eat lunch until 1:00 pm.

The Week of May 13th through 18th, 2018 

Spelling is finished for this school year.  

➤Reading and Language Arts:

• We finished the book, The Twits and are now reading Chocolate Fever.  I am so proud of how much this class enjoys reading and hearing good stories! 
• Students will do some research in books on the animals they have chosen to focus on. They will have limited and controlled access to research on the chromebooks to gather photos and information only on their animal.  

➤Math:

• Multiplication fluency:  We will practice all of the fact families we have learned from 0 to 12. We will continue with our mad minutes throughout the last two weeks to help challenge our times tables in a fun way!
• Partner Math:  We will be doing math in partner groups this week.  Students will be working on rounding; greater than, less than and equal to; writing numbers and adding 3 digit numbers.  

➤Science:  Talking about animals and their habitats as well as common facts.  

➤Art:  Experiencing the art form of Value with our focus on the artist, Georgia O'Keeffe.  

We created our work on value with an inspiration from O'Keeffe's love of landscapes.  They did a beautiful job! 

➤Character Trait: Citizenship

➤Homework:

• Math homework for the week: Practice with flashcards.  I will send the flashcards from school home with kids who don't have any at home.
• 20 minutes of reading--record on May Reading Calendar. Calendar due on May 18th. Students need to read 300 minutes or more to receive 100%. April calendars were due last week.  Please send to school as soon as you can.

➤IRI Testing will start the first week of May and will go for about 2 weeks.  Third grade students need to read 110 words correctly in a minute to receive a 3 (on grade level).  This will be the last time these third graders will ever take the IRI so we will try our best to end with our best number of words read!

➤Science Fair:
    I sent home the science fair packet before Spring Break as a guide to help you help your child with their science fair project.  The packet does not need to be turned in just your child's finished science fair project covering the scientific process.  Projects can not be stored so please do not send to school until Friday, May 18th.

• We finished The Story of Helen Keller and watched the movie.  The kids enjoyed it so much and were trying to sign to each other for days!
• We will start the read aloud, The Twits by Roald Dahl. He is the author of The BFG.
• Students will pick their favorite animal and make a small poster presentation with facts about their animal.  This will be done in class only.
