Homework:  Students will have Math homework on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.  It is so important for students to work on their homework and bring it with them the next day as we use it as a learning tool and go over it as a class the next day and it does not benefit students who have not attempted the work on their own first.  I appreciate the time you give to helping your child and the rest of the class be prepared for learning the next day!
Nightly reading and recording minutes read on December Calendar is also important homework as well as practicing spelling words.

The week of November 16th through 20th in Third Grade

Reading:  We are enjoying our class book, The Mouse and The Motorcycle.  We are looking up vocabulary from the book in the dictionaries.  We will finish it this week and watch the movie and do a comparison.  We are working on reading a passage and answering questions in varying levels of difficulty from direct answers to inferring what the information is telling us. 

Language Arts:  Correcting grammar mistakes in daily language. Practicing spelling words
Mountain Language-variety of grammar and language practice.  Working on parts of a sentence and identifying the subject and predicate of sentences.

Spelling List #4 is for two weeks.  The test will be on Friday, November 20th.

Math:   Math4Today:  Practicing rounding to nearest 10's and 100's, solving problems with three digit numbers using borrowing and carrying, story problems using addition and subtraction to find the missing piece, using graphs to find information using addition and subtraction.  Common Core Math:   Multiplying and dividing using multiples of 6's and 7's and breaking them down in two numbers that will easily equal 10 (decomposing--for example:  a 7 has addends of 1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2 and 6+1).  Look for the problem set paper to help explain what we are working on or email me with any questions and I will get back to you as soon as I see your email.

JUNGLE BOOK CELEBRATION INFORMATION:  Students will be allowed to dress up as a character from the story "The Jungle Book" on Thursday, October 29th.  Rules for the costume are the outfit must be school appropriate-no leggings that are not covered by shorts or skirts, face paint is allowed,  masks are allowed as long as they are tied to the book character, shoulders must be covered.  
Treats for the celebration:  We will be watching the Disney version of the Jungle Book in the afternoon and treats would be wonderful!  If anyone would like to send in treats for the class to enjoy that would be great!  If your child has an allergy to specific things it may be helpful to send them with something special they can enjoy.  I will let everyone know about any treats I am told are coming.  Thank you in advance for helping us make our celebration delicious and fun! 
**So far I have a parent bringing in caramel corn and apple juice.  The party will start at 1:15 pm.

And Lastly...Conference Sign ups:  Parents should have received an email asking you to go to a link I provided to sign up for a 15 minute parent teacher conference on one of the days we are conferencing next week.  I have heard from most of the families but I have a some that have not signed up yet.  If you did not receive that email and link please let me know so I can get that information out to you.  The link will ask you to submit your child's name, your name and then to select one day and one time  that you could meet with me at the school to talk about your wonderful child.  I am really looking forward to meeting with everyone!  I love my class!!

Reading:  Continuing to read the "Jungle Book" and use our reading strategies to write responses in our reading journals.  Reading chapter books on their reading levels.  Working on comprehension and understanding a plot and sequence in a selected reading.

Language Arts:  Adjectives and Adverbs.  Correcting grammar mistakes in daily language. Practicing spelling words.

Spelling:  This week in spelling, students will be taking a spelling inventory to determine their spelling level.  A shorter list of spelling words will be sent home next week.  

Math:  :  Math4Today:  Practicing rounding to nearest 10's and 100's, solving problems with three digit numbers using borrowing and carrying, story problems using addition and subtraction to find the missing piece, using graphs to find information using addition and subtraction.  Common Core Math:  Starting a new unit on time and distance measuring and including that information using tape diagrams.  

Friday:  Enrichment Club, Chess and Art.  We will be learning about the art of "Torn Paper Collage" and will begin making our own!

Homework:  Students will have Math homework on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.  It is so important for students to work on their homework and bring it with them the next day as we use it as a learning tool and go over it as a class the next day and it does not benefit students who have not attempted the work on their own first.  I appreciate the time you give to helping your child and the rest of the class be prepared for learning the next day!

Social Studies:  Learning about parts of a globe:  Continents, oceans, north and south poles, equator, longitude and latitude lines, northern and southern hemisphere.


Friday:  Enrichment Club, Chess and Art.  We are working on our own art piece inspired by artist Romero Britto.  


Homework:  This week students will have math homework on Tuesday and Wednesday night only. Wednesday they can take their Math4Today sheet home to review for our test on Thursday.  Nightly reading minutes.  Reading calendar for September was due by Monday, the 5th.  Please send in to school as soon as possible. 


Scholastic Book Orders:  I sent a packet of book orders home with students today (Monday the 5th) and they can order through Saturday online.  If the order is coming into school, it needs to be here by Friday the 9th.  You can click on the link to the right and use our classroom code:  GWNL2. 


Communication Survey:  I sent home a bright yellow paper for parents to fill out and return to school.  I want to make sure I have every one's information correct and that everyone is receiving information from me as well as the school.  I want to be able to answer any questions you may have.
